黄粉虫干品含脂肪30%，含蛋白质高达50%以上，此外还含有磷、钾、铁、钠、铝等常量元素和多种微量元素。

因干燥的黄粉虫幼虫含蛋白质40%左右、蛹含57%、成虫含60%，被誉为“蛋白质饲料宝库”。

黄粉虫不仅可作饲料，而且可以食用。

其幼虫含粗蛋白56.58%，脂肪28.20%，蛹含粗蛋白57%，成虫含粗蛋白64%，其含量大大高于鸡蛋、牛肉、羊肉等常规动物性食品，且有易于消化吸收，被誉为昆虫中的“蛋白之王”。

形态特征

黄粉虫一生（指一个生长周期），分为卵、幼虫、蛹、成虫四个阶段。

2、卵

乳白色，很小，长约1-2毫米，直径为0.5毫米，呈椭圆形。

卵外面有卵壳，比较薄，起保护作用，卵液为白色乳状粘液。

卵分为：卵壳、卵核、卵黄、原生质。

2、幼虫

黄色有光泽，长约35毫米，宽约3毫米，呈圆筒形。

有十三节。

各节连接处有黄褐色环纹。

腹面淡黄色。

头胸所占虫体的比例较短，约为身体的1 /5。

身体直，皮肤坚，中间较粗。

腹部末端一节较小。

头缝呈U字形，咀扁平。

介在第9腹节尾突与体纵轴近直角形。

尾突尖，向上弯曲。

3、蛹

幼虫长到50天后，长约2-3厘米，开始化蛹。

蛹头大尾小，头部基本模样，两足（薄翅）向下紧贴胸部。

蛹的两侧呈锯齿状，棱角。

蛹初为白色半透明，体较软，渐变褐色后变硬。

4、成虫

蛹在25℃以上经过一星期后蜕皮为成虫。

虫刚刚蜕皮出来为乳白色，甲壳很薄，十来个小时后变为黄褐色，黑褐色，有光泽，呈椭圆形，长约14毫米，宽约6毫米，甲壳变得又厚又硬，这时完全成熟了。

经过交配产卵进行第二代繁殖。

虫体分为头、胸、腹三部分。

成虫头部比幼虫头部多长出一对触须，并且是幼虫面的五倍长。

足三对，一对长在前胸部，二对长在腹部，足长比幼虫长8至10倍。

每个足尖二个钩爪，足趾上有毛剌。

背部翅膀上有竖纹若干条。

成虫虽然有一对漂亮的翅膀，但只能作短距离飞行，翅膀一方面保护身躯，另一方面还有助于爬行。
